Open Descent is started by the ALT control when you perform a SET/PULL action. To begin, you set the desired lower altitude and then pull the altitude knob to engage Open Descent. This combination switches the flight path from holding altitude to a managed, continuous descent, which is exactly what you want when you’re ready to descend.

Using ALT HOLD would just keep you at the current altitude, not descend. Descending to a specific altitude like 8000 feet is a direct target, but it doesn’t engage the Open Descent mode itself. OPEN DES ALTITUDE sounds like a target, but it isn’t the action that actually initiates the mode. The SET/PULL action on the ALT control is the method that activates Open Descent.
